with our weather station on top of it.
Our weather station is the Vantage Pro 2 from Davis Instruments, which sits on top of the Lake Placid Middle High School. The red circle on the satellite photo indicates its location on the building. It measures several weather variables including temperature, dew point temperature, barometric pressure, relative humidity, wind speed and direction, wind gusts, wind chill, solar radiation and UV radiation. The unit is solar powered but also has a battery. It emits a wireless radio signal containing the weather data which is picked up by a console in the classroom. Data are sorted there and downloaded to the computer on a regular basis. There are displays on the classroom computer for easy observation and monitoring.
There are several local, regional and wide ranging uses for the information. Data are sent on a regular basis to the National Weather Service(NWS) and the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administation(NOAA) for use in weather and climate prediction. Regional TV and radio stations can use the data. Students and teachers in the region and elsewhere can utilize the data for classroom activities and projects. The data will allow a better understanding of how weather variables change and affect the community. Athletes and tourists planning to visit the region can use the information to help plan their stays.
There are several links provided to view the weather statistics. Please use them as often as you like. Special thanks go to many people for helping to make this station possible. These include the members of the Lake Placid School Band, members of the community, Dr. Stretton, Dr. Messner, Mr. White, Mr. Dodd, Mr. Bonadouce, Mr. Winch, and Mr. Beany. Special thanks go to Erin and Kaylee, students in Mr. Dodd's web class that helped in creating the web page. We are grateful for the weather station.
